Siempre resulta muy agradable comprobar que la escena Neofolk emerge victoriosa en nuestro país de la misma manera que en el resto del mundo. Un referente inexcusable de este hecho lo encontramos en el segundo volumen recopilatorio de bandas neofolks hispanas editado por la revista La Defunción y Caustic Records, “My Dear Freaks II”.
Su presentación ya de por si resulta muy atractiva, en ella se adjuntan fotografías de personas con malformaciones tomadas a principios del siglo pasado. Estas imágenes ya nos van narrando el contenido del trabajo, sensaciones bizarras e inusuales, estáticas y volátiles. Texturas heterogéneas presentadas en 14 suculentos platos dignos del mejor chef, que conjugados entre sí nos otorgan una acertada visión global de la situación del género neofolk y post-industrial en España.
Curiosa resulta la inclusión de dos proyectos ajenos a nuestras fronteras, el proyecto portugués The Joy of Nature y los argentinos Kutna Hora. Sin embargo, sus aportaciones resultan mucho más que recomendables, otorgando a esta compilación una calidad inigualable dentro de los catálogos musicales de nuevas tendencias independientes.
Pasemos a analizar el contenido del disco: La carta de este suculento menú comienza con una lograda introducción que corre cargo de la propia Defunción. El entrante lo proporciona Der Blaue Reiter, la faceta martial folk del multifacético Sathorys Elenorth.
Los platos fuertes los encontramos en Trobar de Morte, con un apasionante guiso de folk combinado con unas dulces voces y una fantástica percusión como especia secreta, que aporta a la composición una fuerza y plasticidad especial.
El segundo plato bien podría ser el octavo tema, 'Why Do I Hate You, Finland?' un jugoso corte, muy apto para las pistas de baile, con el que el proyecto madrileño Kuu sabe dejar un buen sabor de boca, deseando repetir lo antes posible.
Justa mención y referencia merece el proyecto portugués The Joy of Nature, demostrando una absoluta maestría en el campo de la ecualización y la producción. Sopesa en todo momento el alcance de las notas y la profundidad de las mismas, generando de esta manera verdaderas atmósferas que se configuran serpenteantes en la mente del oyente. La voz de Luís Couto se arrastra como la arena del desierto sobre trémulas y volátiles melodías que nos hacen soñar con parajes inhóspitos y olvidados.
El influjo embriagador del buen vino lo encontramos en Ô Paradis, que presentan un tema muy influenciado por los austriacos Novy Svet, aunque la voz de Demian me suena mucho mejor que la del “Nuevo Mundo”; para qué nos vamos a engañar...
Narsilion nos regala uno de sus muchos temas dulces y ensoñadores, en este caso 'Las Puertas del Mar' nos ofrece unas sosegadas y bellas melodías que la voz de Lady Nott sabe vestir, enfatizando más aún lo que ya de por sí es digno de atención.
Y para terminar con este suculento menú, recomendaría como postre emborrachado en alcohol la alucinante aportación de Eldar, “Baraeco Sin”, en el que tambores de guerra redoblan amenazantes sobre un paisaje épico en el que cualquier cosa puede pasar.
Un importante detalle digno de admiración que esconde “My Dear Freaks II” es su dedicatoria, ya que ofrecen este trabajo a todos las asociaciones que contribuimos en lo posible a mantener activa la escena independiente. Entre ellas destacan Maldoror, Elegy, Antiphonal, Escalera Sin Peldaños, Sonido Obscuro y Mentenebre entre otros.
“My Dear Freaks II” es un trabajo indispensable para conocer la oculta calidad del neofolk hispano en general. Lo recomiendo fervientemente para mantener viva la llama que estos admirables artistas, que se dan cita en 65 minutos de buena música, han encendido con su ilusión y esfuerzo.
After the first stellar release of this compilation series, we're presented with a great follow-up presenting some great bands from Spain and a couple of others that have been adopted into this scene. This album is presented in a nice looking tri-fold digi-pack with minimal information about the bands presented and tracklisting. The music is packed in on fourteen unique and captivating pieces.
With the first release of this series, we were first introduced to a few of these excellent bands that are now a solid part of Gothic Paradise, such as Trobar de Morte and Narsilion. Now we have some others that are new at least to me and others that are still very much recognized in the dark music scene such as Der Blaue Reiter, Kutna Hora and Fayrierie. The disc begins with an "Intro" from my good friends at La Defuncion putting together the sounds and spoken word which provides an excellent segue to the militaristic fantasy music of Der Blaue Reiter with a favorite selection "Eyes of the Lost" from their album Silencis. As unique as this band and their style is, it fits remarkably well with what's presented on the rest of this compilation. There are a couple of somewhat experimental pieces, with many delving into the dark ambient recesses of the genre with selections from Eldar, Silent Love Of Death and The Joy Of Nature providing a trio of dark, dreamy and atmospheric pieces. These are all pieces that fans of the dark, brooding nature of ghost ambient and dark ambient music will love with deep, heavy or whispered vocals.
The rest of the album is fairly cohesive and stays on track with the beautiful ethereal, medieval and fantasy music of Narsilion and Trobar de Morte. This style remains a favorite of mine on this disc with Der Blaue Reiter also included with their somewhat crossover sound. Some of the dark folk styles are a nice addition with Kutna Hora and Fayrierie including pieces in the middle of the disk. These are all favorites, not only on this compilation, but overall in these genres and so the inclusion of each artist named above makes this a great collector's item. There are also two new artists I wasn't previously familiar with that make it into my list of favorites at least from this disc. First off the beautiful compositions and vocals from Persona with their piece "Eyes of the Lost" is another great addition to the somber, but beautiful ethereal genres. And right along with the other previously mentioned artists, I believe La Gueta La Runa also fits well with their dreamy selection "Painfullove".
The only reason why I don't give this a perfect rating is for two things. First, the inclusion of Kuu's piece "Why do I hate you, Finland?" which is not that great to begin with, quite experimental and not structured well, though the music does have potential. But on top of that, the quality of the track submission is fuzzy, as if it were a badly recorded CD-R or corrupt or low-quality mp3, plus the track isn't cut well with the first second of another song included at the end. I think if you got rid of that piece, this would be a perfect compilation, which is extremely rare. To finalize the disc, we get another instrumental ending from Caustic Records that is well composed and is a perfect ending for another real gem for any dark music lover's collection.
Thinking about our present days the NEOFOLK arts and minds is something we gotta deal with. These are strange days and these artists involved in this compilation are saying to us, remembering the sounds of the tradition they are playing the absurd world we live. Their art is made strictly to tell us the shadow of the past and the main question: the past is not something dead, but their consequences will strike another time above all in the worlds of culture. The Compilation is perfect and it is the second volume of a project really well designed and connected with the best “milieu” of the post industrial arena. The track 4th by SILENT LOVE OF DEATH is a real trauma, and creates a whole dimension of mystery and horror. I gotta confess that in my industry, motion picture, is not easy to convince producers about the value of this kind of art to use it in horror sound tracks. Kutna Hora's track is a masterpiece (8), LAS GUETA la RUNA follows a lost dimension and they reach it straight like a V2. This compilation is must to have to focus this “grey” area of NEO FOLK especially for people that aren't so comfortable with these sounds. The Label is making a great work and another time it reveals the great vibes present in Spain about this kind of imaginary.
Spain have produced a lot of great artists in the Dark Folk, Medieval, Neo Classical and Post Industrial genre so why not gather a bunch together on a collage of magical songs and visions of another world? Said and done My Dear Freaks 2 is the ascendant of the first, namely My Dear Freaks, in the collection of great and inspiring music from the land down south. On for the ride is also Kutna Hora of Argentina and The Joy of Nature of Portugal, all together it is a wild rush through magical forests and shady cafes.
Starting out on the album is a track that I assume is created by the people behind the record label Le Defuncion, or at least that’s the only logical explanation I have for the name. It is basically a rhythmical song with a buzz of horns added to it along with some weird almost chanting of a female and some screams at the end. It is a good intro I guess although to short to really say anything. It gets followed up with Eyes of the Lost by Der Blaue Reiter, a song that reminds me a lot of martial projects such as Dernière Volonté or maybe Rome although with that charming Spanish accent to the English vocals. The third track by Persona is quite different with its ambience in the beginning leaning more and more over into a silent chorus of flutes and enchanting female vocals, it is really a soothing and lovely track filled with exotic visions of magic long lost. The fourth track by Eldar is another martial industrial track with a chanting male voice speaking in the background, quite majestic in its essence. The fifth track by Silent Love of Death really appeals to me with its minimal ambient landscape and its mysterious almost ritual vocals and static slow drumming, like a slowly draining nightmare. The sixth track by The Joy of Natura is slowly instrumental folkloric song played by flute, strings and the gentle sound of pouring water. It then changes mood into a more bizarre instrumental twist like that of Devil Doll, redeeming but still its intro is the strong part. Next up is Ô Paradis with a folkish song that adds some bizarre choirs mixed into the more rural and quite parts.
Number eight by Kuu is just weird, some Arabic sounding background to a steady bass and some guy who apparently hate our neighbours. Kutna Hora delivers a song with a mix of both pop and neo folk, its quite good but the message makes me wanna puke. Fayrierie is ye olde Spanish neo folk with strings and a lamenting make vocal, I cant really complain but not my piece of music. Narsilion is splendid as always with their fae-inspired music that actually breaks through even my harsh surface, I have a true genuine love for this band and all their spinoff project including Trobar de Morte and Der Blau Reiter. The music of this retinue is dreamy, enchanting and inspiring and it is no mystery that all three appear on this very album. It would be a great buy just for the three acts alone so consider the rest a big bonus. Since I have already mentioned Trobar de Morte number thirteen is Las Gueta La Runa with a quite basic, neofolkish and catchy song, however the mix is somewhat bad and the buzz tend to go through my speaker when the female vocals peaks. No big downside but still its notable. The last song called outro is performed by, ehm, Caustic Records and is a dreamy and quite interesting mix of ambience, vocals and martial drums. Interesting..
This is a great collection of artists and I would be a fool not to recommend it for the sole purpose of enlightening people around the world of the rich and great material that Spain do contribute with to the underground scene. Get it for the sake of finding a new a ripe group of artists to devote a portion of your economy to or just indulge in those that you have yet to hear..
Segunda oportunidad nos ofrecen La Defuncion y Caustic Records para acercarnos a nuestros queridos genios de la escena subterránea ibérica, por más que el disco se titule My Dear Freaks 2. Será así como sean vistos desde fuera estos resplandecientes grupos de una escena microscópica, oculta a la visión del común de los españoles por los medios de comunicación de masas. Pero como los animalículos de van Leeuwenhoek no sólo existen sino que son capaces de llevar a cabo algunos de los fenómenos más sorprendentes de la naturaleza como la fermentación de los azucares, la descomposición de la materia orgánica y la propagación de las enfermedades y la muerte.
Algunas de sus virtudes son la amplia variedad, la capacidad de subsistir y adaptarse en entornos hostiles y la tremenda originalidad de sus estructuras. Es por ello que cada uno de estos discos que ponen en conjunto tan diversos proyectos suponen una celebración en honor a las bandas partícipes y de reconocimiento a los sellos, fanzines, tiendas y oyentes. Aunque muzike.org no se encuentra entre los agradecimientos (quedamos aún más abajo a la izquierda) se da por satisfecha y trata de colaborar en la medida en que a sus redactores les sea posible, como en esta noticia publicada tiempo ha por Icrow y este artículo firmado por el ínclito secretario general.
El disco se inicia con una introducción elaborada por La Defuncion en la que las percusiones marciales y las atmósferas dan paso a la presentación... Sus cuerpos proceden de la oscuridad de la noche. Han sido liberados de las tinieblas y del sufrimiento.
Der Blaue Reiter - Silencis - Eyes of the Lost En dos temas nos encontraremos al dúo formado Sathorys Elenorth y Lady Nott; en esta ocasión, morfológicamente marciales y apocalípticos. Buena elección de tema de su reciente Silencis, aunque mi preferido sea el puramente instrumental Abyssus abyssum más difícil de incluir en un disco con intenciones ilustrativas. El futuro de este proyecto se torna muy interesante tras su fichaje por el sello Black Rain para próximos trabajos y su cercana participación en el Treffen (de la que esperamos informaros en pocos días)... y es comprensible escuchando estas atmósferas enardecedoras aunque perladas de derrota. Somos las voces, la destrucción en vosotros mismos. Más allá de la guerra, más allá del cielo, abrazando el paraíso en los ojos, en los ojos de los perdidos.
Persona - Dia d'Hivern Al dúo catalán lo conocimos por su participación en el Ethereal Fest 2008 aunque entonces nos dejaran una sensación agridulce. Resultó una actuación algo fría, debido en gran parte a la fuerte componente ambiental que además hubo de encontrarse con algunos problemas de sonido. Escuchado de estudio las sensaciones mejoran. Las percusiones de fondo son tremebundas y la flauta aporta extrañeza. Son mejores las partes narradas que las cantadas, resultando un conjunto tan opresivo como de una extraña sacralidad.
Eldar - Solve Et Coagula - Baraeco Sin El marcial de Marc Merinee, sin embargo, genera sensaciones diferentes, mayor grandeza y ecos supremacistas con grandes percusiones y discursos inentiligibles para mí enterrados entre la tormenta de teclados. Un gran tema, candidato a aparecer próximamente en Sobre Alas de Acero y en sesiones laibacheras (si finalmente se concretan), parte de un disco que deseamos echarle mano pronto.
Silent Love of Death - Como la piel Conocemos gracias a este disco el proyecto de dos hermanos, Juan Carlos y Miguel Ángel Toledo, que se declaran admiradores de Bécquer, Espronceda, Poe o Baudelaire y vieron publicados sus creaciones de spoken ambiental plenos de sonidos fríos y lúgubres en 2005 en el disco The Poet's Senses. Me recuerdan poderosamente a nuestros admirados ya desaparecidos Chaos Condensed aunque con textos de carácter más póetico y metafórico...
l The Joy of Nature - A Theatre Burning De Açores, Portugal, procede este proyecto que se nos da ahora a conocer y que comienza en 1999 con una fuerte componente multimedia y nombre completo de The Joy of Nature and Discipline. Nos cuentan que en 2006 acortan su nombre debido a un cambio en su sonido que se vuelve más orgánico, acústico y, añadimos, unido a la tradición. Por nacionalidad nos ha de recordar por fuerza a Sangre Cavallum aunque habrá bajo y atmósferas mezclados con el sonido del arpa, las mandolinas y los cencerros, y una finalidad de corte ritual. En 2008 editaron sendos trabajos, aGkaanta, asRti, Parasamgate (autoeditado) y The Empty Circle, Part I: Swirling Lands of Disquiet and Catharsis (en Steinklang.
Ô Paradis - Sonámbulos Ô Paradis se presenta con este tema en su nueva encarnación de pop experimental y decadencia crooner. Guitarras y acordeón crean la base de un sencillo tema que se ve magnificado en los momentos en que se cuelan instrumentaciones grandilocuentes. Hemos escapado de tantas mentiras... Por haberlo conocido antes, me recuerda siempre a un Corcobado filtrado a través de años de desperanza y lucidez. Se encuentra ahora mismo presentando un EP limitado a 300 copias, La Corte del Rey Pescador.
Kuu - Why Do I Hate You, Finland? Este proyecto madrileño nacido de la obsesión con las nevadas tierras finesas, Kuu significa luna (nos dicen), presenta un leit-motif interesante, la batalla contra uno mismo y el proceso de análisis de la problemática derivada de la conciencia de uno mismo, la malinterpretación de los sentimientos y el caos interno. Soledad en una tierra extraña y una pregunta que se nos presenta, ¿por que te odio, Finlandia?. Cuenta con la colaboración de Matt Howden en los loops de violín pero el conjunto no me termina de llegar por su histrionismo electrónico.
Kutna Hora - Little Flowers in my Hands Conocí a esta formación de Buenos Aires gracias a calandar y en seguida me atrapó, desde Hell is a place on earth con su rock acústico de influencias ochenteras (The Cure) pero permitiendo la aparición de elementos folk. Gran parte del encanto del grupo se haya en la voz de Fernando Javier Diéguez, y en este tema sin duda en el violín de Agustín Mendoza Paz. Esperamos disco nuevo pronto...
Fayrierie - Restless Sleep Falke y Norax presentan nuevo tema en este disco que mantiene el excelente sonido alcanzado con su disco Michelia-Campaka que desgraciadamente quedó sin comentario en muzike.org a pesar de desearlo fervientemente (más aún tras verles junto a Narsilion y Faun el año pasado en Pallejà). Sólo es necesario escuchar la guitarra, el chelo y la fuertemente expresiva voz de Norax para caer en la ensoñación.
Narsilion - Namárië - Las Puertas del Mar Buena elección la realizada con este tema, aunque mi preferido confeso sea Desperta Ferro, ya que representa la faz más mágica y fantástica de Sathorys y Lady Nott. Grandes son los momentos en que las dos voces se unen, aparecen los violines y flautas y llega un potente final de percusiones. Un disco esencial (comentado aquí) y un proyecto que cuenta con el beneplácito de muzike.org.
Trobar de Morte - Legends of Blood and Light - The Sorceress ¿Es posible estar enamorado de un grupo? Sin duda... muzike.org siempre sentirá un vacío en su alma en todo momento en que no se encuentre asistiendo a un directo de Lady Morte, Arianne, Armand, Fernando Cascales y José Luis Frías. Son tantos los sentimientos y las vivencias surgidas con sus discos y conciertos que se enredan formando nudos. Nudos que hasta el momento han impedido que aparezca un comentario de uno de los discos imprescindibles para comprendernos. Lo habrá en un futuro que por fuerza habrá de ser idílico. Sea su presencia aquí celebrada danzando mentalmente en los claros del bosque bajo la luz de la luna.
La Gueta La Runa - Painfullove Formación asturiana interesantísima con una fuerte componente folclórica, y que esperamos poder ver en directo en alguna ocasión, nos presenta aquí un excelente tema grabado en directo de aires neoclásicos y extremada sencillez. Flautas, teclado, vientos y voz conforman un sonido que recuerda al estilo denominado etéreo de bandas como Caprice. Un valor ascendente a seguir...
Cierra el disco una excelente creación ambiental, aunque cortada con fuertes explosiones percusivas y la aparición de los teclados, aportada por Manix S. y con texto extraído de Así habló Zaratustra de Nietzsche.
Apoteó(apocalip)sis y cierre de un disco que nos lleva a desear dos, tres... miles de My Dear Freaks. Siga adelante una escena que ya nos ha entregado más de lo necesario en las grandes creaciones que este disco recorre, presenta, permite conocer y homenajea.
A truly enjoyable inner look through the depths of the Spanish dark underground scene, courtesy of Caustic Records, a label that is offering a great deal of support to home-bands, exposing to the international scene brilliant talents both in the electronic/EBM and in the dark folk and neoclassical genres. This compilation covers artists belonging to the label's "white brand", the one covering the latter genres, offering a stunning selection of music that has a genuinely dark taste purely made in Spain. Ou of the generous 14 tracks featured, two only feature "guest" artists, namely the acclaimed Kutna Hora (out of Argentina) proposing a tear-jacking acoustic guitar ballad which is some of the best output from the band to date, and The Joy of Nature from Portugal, who transport us back in time and into a landscape mutating from heavenly to apocalyptic with no way back. Some of the best talents on offer are the likes of O Paradis, who contribute a sample of their acoustic romantic timeless ballads, Fayrierie with a taste of faerie world as you'd expect, Der Blaue Reiter with a wide reaching take on their bombastic neo-classicism, Narsilion who give us a much needed taste of heavenly atmospheres. But even more exciting is to get to know new artists and there's plenty on display on this compilation. Persona perform cold-wave in the vein of acts as Fin de Siecle, Silent Love of Death perfectly mirror their name into their brand of death-wave, Trobar de Morte give a world twist to the proceedings, Eldar go bombastic while La Gueta La Runa is a bit of a weak link to the heavenly world, yet an act to watch. A variety of genres, all having a common ground though, and all blending seamlessly to give a smooth listening experience. The only act a bit apart in terms of feel are Kuu with a beat driven piece that struggles a bit to fit with the global mood of the album. As this disc rarely leaves the focussed attention of the laser beam of my CD player, I can confirm that this is a wonderful pulsating insight to the Iberic take on the darkest side of contemporary music. A very varied CD with a well-worked common ground rooted in melancholy, dreams, fantasy and a dive in the grandeur of the past, all in modern key.
